From Saloon to Salon: Real Men Get Pedicures

Ever have one of those days when you’re just not sure everything is really happening? Maybe you’re in an alternate universe or having some kind of a weird dream? Well, that was my day on December 8, 2018.

I attended the second half of the first-time home buyer’s course at Rural Resources so I could write about that (see article in this edition). Then I was going to go to the gym, but I was hungry — and I’d read that working out while hungry can actually burn muscle instead of build it, so I used that excuse to head over to a local restaurant for breakfast. It was 11 AM.

When I entered the eatery, two rowdy men who already reeked of alcohol were sitting at a table towards the front, and they immediately started in on me for not sitting with them. I’d never seen them before in my life. I told them I was a reporter and was planning on working, then proceeded to set up my laptop so I could write about the seminar I’d just attended while it was fresh in my mind.

Clearly, that was not going to happen.

The two men, whom I will refer to as Jim and Ron, continued to talk to me while I was trying to write. I lived for many years near Boston, so I’ve had my fair share of dealing with drunks. And I knew these two were not going to leave me alone.

“You need to run with us,” the older man, Ron, said.

“Yeah, beautiful lady, run with us for six hours,” Jim stated.
