A Little Bit of Wild West: Local Rodeos

Okay, so I’ve lived here over ten years and have never been to a local rodeo. Yeah, yeah, I know. Lame. But I made up for that by going to the Colville Rodeo and the Newport Rodeo within a one-week period. So you can stop laughing at me now.

I have to say, rodeos are kind of addictive. The drill teams are entertaining to watch, and the bull and bronco riding is riveting. The barrel racing makes me want to hop on a horse and take off across our many fields. In case you’re wondering, yes, I can ride. And seeing all these gorgeous horses and their accomplished riders makes me want to get back out there again.

The Wild West is a part of our heritage here, if you think about it. Pioneers, early settlers — horses, gold, ranching, mining — these are all a part of our local history. Rodeos are really a neat way to remind ourselves of days gone by. While roping calves may not seem like much fun for the calves, the skill is still necessary today when trying to administer medication, install tags, or any other reason one might need to catch and hold a calf.
